Sound Art, DIY Synths, and Cassette Tape Loops

Grant Bouvier
Sound artist, composer, music technologist and audio engineer Grant Bouvier has been working with electronics and analog mediums to create immersive, process based pieces of sonic art since 2013. An Alumni of the University of the Arts and Philadelphia native, Bouvier began designing and building his own modular synthesizer equipment for studio work and performances as a way of better connecting with his creative tools. He is now studying Sonic Art as an MFA candidate at Brooklyn College, and was the winner of both the judges' and teams choice awards at the Red Bull Hack the Hits 2017 Music Tech hackathon in San Francisco this past November. Among other things, Grant Bouvier loves long naps, a strong cup of coffee, and surfing the world wide web.

What inspired you to make this project?
I have always been on the hunt for new and intuitive ways of making music and art. I am especially fascinated by process music, where a composer sets into motion a phenomena and allows it to play out rather then actively taking part in the writing. Tape music and DIY synths have provided me with a really inspiring way to tape into process for art without the use of a computer or overly cumbersome equipment and I find their audio characteristics extremely pleasing.
